Ingrid Harten's research in Dr. Wight's lab focuses on the role of proteoglycans in atherosclerosis. Her project involves studying Hutchinson Gilford Progeria Syndrome, a model of accelerated atherosclerosis in children that occurs in the absence of overt blood lipid abnormalities. This disease is a rapid aging syndrome caused by specific mutations in the nuclear envelope protein Lamin A. Through the use of an animal model and cell culture systems we hope to characterize the proteoglycan abnormalities which contribute to the process of accelerated atherosclerosis and perhaps uncover links between these molecules and the aging process.
